We were tired after a week in the Valley doing home repair and community service and sunburned from a day at the beach celebrating all that God had done that week…but we had Whataburger and each other and we were happy and so full.

This Week in Sunday School: The Psychology of Disgust

It’s long been known that repeated exposure to something that you find disgusting can “habituate” you to that thing so that you no longer find it disgusting — think a parent getting accustomed to dirty diapers.  But a recent study into the psychology of disgust actually found something pretty interesting: once you become habituated to something, you can retain that habituation for years, potentially even the rest of your life!  It’s kind of like a really bizarre super-power…but is that power quite as super as it’s cracked up to be?

This Week, we’ll explore the science of habituation.  Is it possible to become habituated to things that harm us?  If we’re around sin all the time, does it change our relationship with sin?  Does being in a gossipy friend group change our understanding of what it means to be a good friend? And are these changes permanent?  Can it work the other way — can we be habituated to something positive, like compassion?  Where do science and scripture intersect?

Gather in the Youth Center at 10am.

Wednesday After School Program

Every Wednesday, we’re opening up our Youth Center from 3:50 – 5:30pm to give youth a place to hang out, do homework, play games, and build community.

Sunday Nights and Other Activities

Ultimate Frisbee at Manchaca UMC

On Sunday, February 8th, all youth, grades 6-12, are invited to carpool with us down to Manchaca UMC to play ultimate frisbee with the homies down south.

We’ll leave Northwest Hills UMC after the conclusion of our special Brunch and Worship Service in Celebration of Black History Month.  Lunch, snacks, and drinks will be provided.  Youth should wear close-toed shoes and clothes they are comfortable moving around in and potentially getting dirty.  We’ll leave Manchaca UMC at 2:30 and will be back at Northwest Hills UMC at approximately 3:00 PM.

Please note: There will be no Sunday night youth gathering on Sunday, February 8th.

Confirmation 2026

Confirmation, literally “to make firm,” is a holy and sacred time set aside to teach and nurture young people in the basics of the Christian faith and what it means to be a United Methodist.  Open to all 6th graders and youth older than 6th grade who have not been through confirmation, Confirmation is a time for students to ask questions and explore what their faith means to them.

At the end of the class, Confirmands who choose to do so will have the opportunity to publicly affirm their faith and become a professing member of Northwest Hills UMC during services on Confirmation Sunday: May 24th, 2026.

Please note: Youth who have already been confirmed are still welcome to come to class on Sunday nights, play games, hang out, grow, learn, and share their wisdom and insights.

District-Wide Youth Scavenger Hunt

On Sunday, February 22nd, we’ll gather with our friends from youth groups all over the North District for a friendly, competitive scavenger hunt at (the defending Armed Forces Bowl Champion) Texas State University!

We will gather at the church to for lunch at 12:00 PM following the conclusion of the Traditional Service.  If needed, we’ll hang out together for a bit before heading down to San Marcos for the Scavenger Hunt.

Youth and adults from each church will compete in teams to capture photos and videos of their team engaging in various Texas State-based shenanigans.  Each photo or video is worth a set number of points based on the difficulty/ridiculousness of that activity, and the team with the most points wins!
